[RC] Bare VS Shod: There must be a compromise - - Barb PeckRegarding the discussion. I agree with all Karen S.'s comments. In a bare foot , a small portion of the sole does bear weight along with a portion of the wall. In a shod horse the foot is prepared so that the steel makes contact with the wall and a small portion of the sole. Ever see hot shoeing? Another thing alot of people don't realize is that the wall is actually 2 layers- the outer wall that can either be black or white - and the inner wall (which is much stronger tissue than the outer colored wall) and this inner wall is always white. You can see this clearly in a freshly trimmed black hoof from the bottom ( and it can be evident on the outside especially if agressively taking off a flare from the out side- you'll eventually rasp off the outer black wall and then there'll be whitish wall...) You can see this on a white hoof too is you look close enough after rasping the bootm of the wall. You can see the tissue change in the inner wall even though they're both white. I very much like keeping a horse barefoot as much as possible (and easyboot has come along way in accomplishing that in the last 5 years - especially looking at Karen C and Dave R's accomplishments in them. ) Barb =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
