I don't know if the writer was just trying to make it sound really crazy, or if the ride was truly like that, but to someone outside the AERC circle, it could seem like a bit much was asked of those horses (the description of the horse coming up from being dunked in the deep puddle, 'gasping for air' is not a pleasant image, and the comments about how sore the horses were isn't either).
