Re: [RC] Ulcers and endurance horses - Diane TrefethenI am not a vet but one statement here doesn't seem quite right:Von Simson, Cristiano wrote: If you feed them alfalfa all day long, their diet will be too rich in proteins, and they will also get too much calcium. I can't see how the amount of alfalfa consumed DURING a ride would be enough to be any problem at all. While they may scarf grain and/or beet pulp, there just isn't enough time to eat more than a flake or two of hay. Compare the time needed to eat 2 flakes of alfalfa, which many horses get routinely at home as part of the 1/2 & 1/2 alfalfa/hay diet, with the time available during a ride and they don't even have enough time to eat what they usually consume at home. Therefore, I would think even free-feeding alfalfa DURING a ride wouldn't have a significant impact on their protein or calcium intake. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
