[RC] Methods to teach a horse to tie well - Dolores ArsteI sometimes use the Aussie Tie Ring and a 30ft line. I attach the Tie Ring to something solid using a panic snap like the one used on the Parelli Leads. Or, if I think they are really a problem, I might use a large marine panic snap. The marine one is easier to release from a distance. Be sure what you attach the ring to is solid. Now, with the long line put it through on the lightest setting. You want him to be able to slip the rope easily. Then, pretend you are tying him and walk down to the end of the lead and wait. He will probably pull back and when he feels the slight restriction, he may pull back harder. That's OK because the rope will just slide thru the ring keeping a firm but giving tension. What you are looking for is for him to teach himself to put slack in the line. Usually, they won't back up farther than 30' before stopping. At the moment he stops, click and treat. It may feel like you are rewarding him for pulling back but really you are rewarding him for stopping and putting slack in the line. Then, gently bring him back up again and try again. This time, he may only go back 15'. Again C/T when he stops and puts slack in the line. Keep doing this until he stops pulling back. You can do this without the ring. But, for a confirmed puller it takes some skill to keep just the right amount of tension on the line without inadvertently rewarding the pulling or creating more panic. I can't tell you how confirmed a puller he is. But, from what you are saying it seems like he doesn't like being confined. And, you can work on that too but working into small spaces.
