Re: [RC] [RC] Electric Fence Corrals - Juli Jakub

I have had my four year old Morab jump out of her almost 5 ft. pasture fence. Funny thing was I only took one horse out...the other was still with her. We were riding out on the back property at my G-ma's farm. She had never done it before and she has never done it again even when we take both horses...it was weird. I heard my husband whistling and then the pitter patter of feet and she galloped up to Daisy and I ...no halter...nothing...so I did the obvious (but dangerous thing) I took Daisy who I trust implicity and galloped her back to the pasture and barn with Be frolicking and galloping next to us. It was awesome fun! But who knows why she chose to jump and why she has never done so since. The one thing is my husband said she trotted up to the fence almost stopped and then just popped over easy as can be. She could have easily jumped out of a corral or panels such as you see at rides. I have also seen horses almost kill themselves struggling when tied to a trailer before breaking the halter and being free without a halter on! No containment is perfect. You have to pick the best for you, train your horse to it, and hope that the random occurance doesn't happen to you. I certainly think some horses are more apt to get in trouble no matter what the containment than others...my mustang would stay tied to the trailer even if the ground opened up and swallowed him whole..the girls...I am not so sure about them...I think a scary disturbance and horses galloping around them in the night would scare them to the point of breaking free from ties or from a corral...but how do I train for that? I would prefer to not practice having horses on the loose galloping behind them while they are tied or in a corral!! They are fine with four wheelers and all that stuff...but a herd of horses galloping around...that is alot of instinct to counter act. Accidents can happen to anyone, but I think it is important to really train for the method you choose. Which is why my horses get brushed, tacked on the trailer everyday..hang out there while I socialize or nap and I tie them to tie rings in the run in and they have to eat off them and hang out while I do chores. They are getting there...Just some thoughts...

I recently had a young horse JUMP over an electric fence while at home. I had put him in an area away from the others for specific reasons. Came back and he was on the other side. The hot wire was set up so he couldn't go under it. He obviously jumped it and it was over 4' high. Not a scratch on him. (Guess a career in jumping might suit him better than endurance? ;-)
