Re: [RC] Some horses can't be tied - Lysane Cree

I also find it difficult to accept that "some horses can't be tied". Some horses have learned "bad lessons" by having broken free or maybe not having had enough practice at tying...But if the horse/pony has such a problem with being tied, I'm not sure I would have taken the all or nothing approach and tie it solid one day until it gives up.
A horse can be taught to stand tied a tiny bit each day by just incorporating it into the routine...the first few times the rope doesn't even have to be tied...I started with getting my mare to stand "tied" in the aisle for brushing - it was me holding the lead and insisting that she stand still. Didn't happen in one day, but she caught on. Then I started putting her in her stall and passed the lead through the bars of the stall and just held her so she was "tied" to me. Easy to release if necessary. She fussed and tried to back and reared a little but eventually stood still. As soon as she did so for one second I released the rope and called it a day. It took longer, sure, and I had to be very patient, but when I finally did tie her solid she wasn't going bonkers. Eventually she stood for longer and longer periods without getting impatient. With time and repetition, most bad habits can be undone. Just my two cents.
