Another idea is to tie with plenty of rock where the horse will paw.  It taught my horse not to paw quite so much.  Was a combination of hard ground and large gravel at the hitching post where she was left tied for awhile.

Sometimes mules like to dig when tied.  The mule folks either carry hobbles
or
a rubber mat.  If you really are interested in teaching your gelding to
tie, put
down a rubber stall mat where he is tied and the digging will stop while he
learns
