Re: [RC] Horrible Accident- Long - Rae CallawayWe camp in groups and with as many horses as we bring, panels or hi-ties are just not practical, so we do use electric pens. For instance, this weekend at the Armadillo, we'll have 7 riders and 10 horses. Since we also have multiple trailers, we tend to park near a fence if we can, then arrange our trailers to protect the pens. There are ways to minimize any danger from other loose horses.

I am not a big fan of electric corrals. I know there will always be some that say that their horse is fine in a portable electric corral, but even your horse is perfectly well mannered, your own corral can easily be taken down by loose horses.
I have not been competing for very long, but at almost every ride I have ridden or volunteered at, there have been loose horses in the night that have gotten out of there electric corrals, and often ran through other corrals in the process.
I always worry about my own horse - a little less when she is in the portable corral that I have with steel panels, but a few times when she has been tied to the trailer, the loose horses have gone charging just behind her.
