[RC] Mane Mite - Lani - Barb PeckLani:
The product is liquid Ivermection (it's oral ivermectin wormer) used
topically
to kill the Northern Fowl Mite which infects the skin under the mane (and
sometimes tail).
You can get it from your Vet- but it'll cost more than if it's available
locally at grain stores
that cater to cows.
Use an eye dropper or pipette, and put drops down along the skin of the
mane from the
poll to the withers. - And since their life cycle is about 5 days - and eggs
hatch from under the skin
you'll have to do this every 7 days for a few iterations.
You're cowboy friend is describing what happens if there is a large
infestation - the ivermectin
absorbs slightly into the skin killing the adult mites - if there's a ton of
them, then when they die, they die in the skin - and then create a condition
that looks like severe danderuff (some skin dies too - and it lifts up) I saw
this on my neighbors horse - 24 hrs after the first application. I just washed
the mane - there wasn't any abrasions - it was just a bad infestation.
These mites do *not* live all over the body. It's only in the skin of the mane
(theres something about the big hair follicle they like). Yes you can apply it
to the skin of the dock of the tail too - Same way- use an eye dropper
and get in down to the skin.
Hope this answers all your questions.
Barb
