3 hours for 18 miles -- thats the OD trail I
remember! The trail is sooo beautiful, but mentally taxing when you
realize how little ground you are covering.
I'm really impressed with the small number of pulls
at this point. This is a trail that will eliminate the most careful horse
and rider team. There is very little dirt on the Mtns (all rock, big
slippery rock). You can do everything right, and just happen to hit a rock
wrong. Of course, the climbs are hard, horses are tired when they
reach the top and tend to not be so careful with where they put their
feet. -- quite unnerving after dark. The farrier also stays very
busy, those rocks will unclinch your nails, as well as trap shoes in between
them. Easyboots don't fare much better, I've personally had the
buckles break off twice.
Watching the "race" is exicting, but truly "to
finish is to win" on these trails -- don't forget to congratulate ever single
finisher!
