I can't speak for everybody, but many of the riders I know from around
have a general rule of thumb with respect to attending rides.  The
number of days of riding has to outnumber the number of days of driving.

Driving 7 or 8 days to get to Virginia (and back) so I can maybe ride
two days doesn't even come close to meeting this criteria.

And the title "National Championship" is meaningless enough to me that
it doesn't compensate for the required amount of driving.  I MIGHT drive
that far for the Old Dominion, but riding the Old Dominion holds much
more meaning for me, besides I will HAVE to drive that far to do the Old
Dominion.  For the "National Championship" I can just wait until it is
closer...or virtually in my back yard again (like it was the time I DID
go to it).

I am uninterested in in doing the National Championship on parts of the
Old Dominion trail (especially since I have heard that the intent is to
make it easier).  If I am going to drive all the way to Virginia, you
can bet I will be doing it so I can do the Old Dominion (and I won't do
that if somebody decides to make the Old Dominion easier too).  I am not
going to waste all that driving on something that I consider to be a
virtually irrelevant event.
