In general this is a good thing) they are more likely to be future engineers. The engineer mentality looks at everything as a means to a desired end. They would only be interested in riding a "skipping" horse if they could see that this would get them where they wanted to go. At your son's age I was a cowboy movie fan. I would have been interested in riding a galloping horse, using a western saddle, while shooting a 1873 single action Colt. Dressage, or hunt seat, or a trotting endurance horse would have left me cold.
