[RC] 100's - Bruce Weary DC

Truman--
You are my hero for having completed 100 milers on a gaited horse. That is a fervent goal of mine that I have yet to accomplish. Cheers to you! Maybe we can work on cloning your mare in my basement laboratory. My assistant, Igor, will be in touch.
I don't propose to have any answers as to the proper way to honor 100 mile horses, but they definitely deserve it. I do suggest, though, that to maintain an accurate impression of what it takes to train for, attempt and complete a 100 miler, we should be either at least occasionally or ongoingly (is that a word?) involved in doing just that. Lots of things have changed in the last ten years, and our memories can get a little fuzzy sometimes. Better horses, better saddles, different electrolyte formulas, different training strategies (a la Tom Ivers, for example), the evolution of the multiday ride, international competition(and I could go on), have all had an effect on what it takes to complete or win a 100 miler. Just as NASCAR and the Tour de France are evolving as to their fuels, engineering and training/strategies, so too, is our demanding sport. Staying "updated" as such, I think will help us keep our pulse on all issues that affect 100 mile horses, including how best to honor them.
I have to go pack the motorhome for the Land of the Sun ride this weekend. Well, maybe after Oprah................. Bruce Weary
