Dabney responds: " They enter these rides for Status. I've
noticed over the years mentions in RC posts like: "My horse is not ready
(or whatever) for a 100, but one day I'd like to do Tevis."
Whoa there Dabney! Your statement might be true for some, but I
really doubt that it's the case for many riders. I can tell you
that there's a slug of folks I know who have uttered or thought those words
and who could not care a whit about "status." For many of us Tevis is
*the* ride that ingited the fires, so to speak. There are tons of local
folks who have no interest in becoming "endurance riders" and doing other
rides, yet they do Tevis because of the allure of the ride and the
trails. Tevis is not a ride, it's an incurable disease...:-)
Do people climb Everest because of "status"? Perhaps. But I
think it takes ! much more than pursuit of "status" to even get to
basecamp.
I'd love to do all the rides. But if someone told me I could only
do one it would be Tevis. Not because of the "status," but because I
would never have known about this sport had it not been for Tevis and thus it
holds a very special place in my heart.
