RE: [RC] Aging by teeth: Galvayne's Groove - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.No, Galvayne's groove can be notoriously unreliable. You have to use it as one more piece of the puzzle, but don't bet on just that. And I wouldn't always believe papers over a vet, as I've seen a fair number of registration papers that were laughably inaccurate from the horse standing in front of me (markings not being even close, colors being different, one occasion of a gelding being listed as a mare!) The thing about teeth is that aging becomes more of a guesstimate as age progresses, as changes vary between individuals based on genetics and environmental conditions. A brand new baby you can age give or take a few weeks, a four year old within a six month range, 7-12 year olds within about a year. Over the age of 13 or so, you can really only give a range...ie, this horse is 13-16 years, or 16-20, or "over 25". Beyond that, we would just tell owners we can't accurately age the animal because we don't do carbon-dating <g>. I have a mule that I know for a fact is in her forties, but her teeth would put her somewhere in her late twenties. You just accept it that aging by teeth gets a lot more inaccurate as time wears on. So it's not unheard of for a sixteen year old horse to have teeth that look more like a twenty year old's. I'd buy that. What I wouldn't buy is someone claiming a seven-year-old mouth belongs to a "two year old". Aging young horses is a lot more exact and a lot less variable than it is in older horses. JME.
