[RC] re: someone to ride with - Cindy CollinsHi, Nicole. Welcome to ridecamp and our sport of endurance. We are thrilled to have you become a part of a sport we love. By reading ridecamp, and all of the other information out there, you can learn so much. I've been involved in endurance since 1979 and still learn new things every day (yes, I know you weren't born then!). I'm hoping that someone from your area will contact you soon. Hopefully, it might be someone with an older endurance horse that you could help condition, and get some experience with our sport. Your horse is too young to be doing any long distance work. I did the same exact thing when I was your age-I took a two year old and rode him too hard. I just didn't know not to and I loved him so much and wanted to ride him everywhere. So, I'd say that you should only ride your two year old lightly. They may look mature, but their bones, ligaments and tendons are not yet strong enough for hard work. Most endurance riders I know do not even break their horses to ride until age 4. Just think of it like this: You don't see 10 year olds running marathons. Their bodies just aren't mature enough to handle the distance and neither are their minds. Please stay in touch.
