Re: [RC] Best GPS? - afwaldrip

I got the Forerunner 101 for Christmas and really like it.  But, I wish I had seen on with the built in HRM.  I really like the Forerunner if I can ever figure out how to work everything.

Subject: [RC] Best GPS?

Hi all,

I apologize if this has been discussed recently, I did a search but couldn't
easily find recent posts. I was getting stuff from 2000-2002, which obviously
doesn't help in 2006!

I am finally in the market for a GPS! I'm trying to decide whether it would be
more useful to have a wristwatch style unit that only does
breadcrumb-trails(Garmin Foretrex or Forerunner), or a handheld (ie somehow
saddle-mounted) that has road/topo maps. One of my concerns with the second
option is that the display will probably be hard to read way down there (as I
bounce along the trail), and my body might get in the way of the receiver
picking up the signal.

Mapping would give me the ability to orient myself according to roads, and to
see the topography ahead of me. Although (thinking aloud here), seeing the
topo wouldn't really help me in a competition situation unless I'd somehow
downloaded the trail ahead of time... and I don't think the ride managers of
the rides I attend usually provide that. So maybe that's not much of a
benefit?

The Forerunner is available with a built-in HRM, has anyone tried it yet? Does
it work well?

Thoughts? Suggestions? Saddle-mount ideas that really work (on a western
endurance saddle)?
