Re: [RC] RE; Underweight Horse - Barbara Moulton

one of the many vets who saw Joy about her
founder/laminitis/insulin resistance what-ever it was
that kept getting her frequently lame THOUGHT she had
Cushings. ( I never did think that as she didn't have
the hair growth or any other other sign except very
often ouchy feet) when we finally ran the blood test (
very long story why it didn't happen sooner and not my
or Joy's fault) it turned out her thyroid wasn't low..
it was high! Probably as a result of coping with
being fed like an insulin resistant pre-cushings horse
when she wasn't. The vet ( no actually the blood
testing lab )prescribed Metaboleeze a supliment very
high in B vitamins and probiotic yeast and before the
first 3 lb bucket was done (60 days)I saw a huge
difference. The vet who couldn't be bothered to
discuss the case much didn't share any ideas but I
think it was the constant pain from the various
abscesses plus very low calorie feeding that kept her
cortisol so high it burned up all her B reserves
putting her into a constant state of depletion. Sounds
like just the kind of hell rescue horses live through.
There is very little I found on the net about high
thyroid in horses just that signs are hard keeper,
anxiety and aggitation along with poor body condition
not corrected by worming or dental care and not caused
by any lack of feed consumed. Joy was losing weight
because we thought when she went off she needed
feeding reduction ( POOR BABY)because the hoof pain
was probably more laminitis related to diet.
she was so HAPPY to finally get the blood work done
and get reintroduced to her best friend pasture grass.
Now she is on dry pasture ( mostly deep mud at the
moment) and as the fields green up she will be
aclimated to more grazing. No grass founder at all and
she was on up to 12 hours a day before everything died
for winter.
I don't know if that helps any- the first vet who saw
Joy in 2004 began the whole reduce the calories theory
and I couldn't get any of the 5 next vets to consider
anything else- it's as bad as a wrong diagnosis from a
people doc, been there, done that, got the T shirt.
Blood work is critical- don't let vets who play god
and can't be bothered talk you out of it.
Barbara ( I wasn't depressed doc I had CANCER) and Joy
( I told you to feed me more..lazy mustang bigot vets
are evil)
