Often times a single hobble is used on either a front or rear foot. A horse can get really savvy about where the rope is and how not to get tangled. To get them used to it you can put a length of hose around the rope near the horse so they are less likely to get caught up. I've never seen anyone picket at ride camp, but I suppose it could be done. I would be more concerned about some one else tripping over the picket line than having a horse that has learned how to picket getting tangled.
