Re: [RC] 2006 WEG Coverage - Diane TrefethenThe time a major, national TV network allots to the telecast of a particular sport is driven by economics. Millions of Americans enjoy watching football and spend a great deal of money on beer, cars, game tickets and sports equipment, probably in that order. Consequently, approximately 20 hours of national broadcast time per week is devoted to football during the season. Baseball likewise attracts a huge audience with similar spending habits. Golf enjoys considerably fewer spectators but they too spend prodigious sums, sufficient to attract high-end advertisers to support several hours a week throughout the summer. Then there's Endurance. According to Gaebler Ventures at http://www.gaebler.com/Television-Advertising-Costs.htm a high quality, 30 second commercial for national television can cost up to $350,000 to produce. Here "less expensive" often translates into "cheaper" and we all know how much damage a cheesy ad can do to a product's image. Plus the average cost per 30 seconds of airtime is $100,000. Can you picture even ONE of our exclusively Endurance-oriented vendors spending up to a half million dollars for a 30 second television commercial? No? Well, THAT is why we got 2 minutes. So, don't bother to contact NBC... unless you have a spare half million in your back pocket.
