Normally, you don't need to "steer" on a trail...or at least I haven't found the need to do that. It's a little hard to use aids when you're hanging on to his tail up a steep hill. You just want him to walk in a straight line. Tailing is basically a form of "driving", but you typically only have one rein. I taught Sunny go left or right by "neck reining" on his butt and pulling his tail to the side to "sidepass" him in the direction I wanted to go, but it was of so little value, didn't bother on any of the other horses.
