Re: [RC] horizontal hoof cracks - what did I miss? - Jennifer AdamThanks to all who answered my questions... Now how do I prevent this? I check her feet and pick them out every day - twice if we've been riding. She's never been lame or sore, I've never noticed any signs of bruising or an abscess. I've never noticed any sore or injury near her coronary band and she hasn't been ill at all. She's on pasture turn-out 24/7 but it isn't very rich, she's never foundered, and she's not overweight. I have the farrier out every 8 weeks. She's barefoot, but she's a mustang so her feet are pretty tough (at least I thought they were.) This is the first time they've ever cracked - usually she just wears them down until the farrier smooths them out a bit. I ride on grass, dirt, some gravel and rocks, but nothing real remarkable. Most of the time she's on grass and dirt. So, if this is caused by an abscess or a piece of migrating gravel, what do I look for next time to keep this from happening? Why didn't my farrier notice anything? Does this mean I should put shoes on her? I want to make sure I take care of her feet - thought I was doing everything I needed to, but maybe I missed something...Thanks again - Jen _________________________________________________________________ Got something to buy, sell or swap?
