RE: [RC] [RC] Resting HR on young horses- now skeletal fitness - Jennifer Adam? (Biggest problem is that ones with such superior cardiovascular systems tempt you to ride beyond what their skeletal systems are conditioned to take.) ? I'm no cardiologist, but hope that thumbnail sketch helps. ? Heidi This is something that worries me - there are plenty of ways to monitor my horse's cardiovascular fitness and I can keep track of her improvements fairly easily. Her muscular fitness is also relatively easy to assess. But how can I be sure that her bones and joints are adequately conditioned without stressing them too much? Right now I simply follow guidelines from Nancy Loving's All Horse Systems Go and Go the Distance, but I feel sort of in the dark because I can't assess it for myself. When I first started running track I could run 5 miles without getting tired - but I struggled with shin splints and a couple of stress fractures all season. Coach made me back off a bit until my bones and ligaments had adjusted to the level of fitness of the rest of me. I don't want to put my horse through that! :) Jen Adam _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live Spaces is here!
