Re: [RC] saddle slipping forward/backward - rides2farI > suppose I could spend my money on a breast collar and a crupper (although I would be more inclined toward breeching) The trouble with breeching is that when they tuck their rump to go down the hill the breeching becomes loose wheras the crupper tightens up. So, when they get to the bottom of the hill on the level and they're ready to go on the breeching is now tight and the crupper is loose. I know the crupper doesn't look comfortable, but honestly, not one of my horses has minded it. I remember reading a book once and every time the packer got to the place where the mountain dropped off he was tightening breeching, then at the bottom he had to loosen it. I didn't understand at that time why but when I saw that a crupper doesn't need to be snug on the flat to be snug going downhill I finally got it. I highly recommend the OF neoprene crupper if you're going to use one. P.S. For the last two years my daughter rode Ben we had to leave his girth extremely loose or he'd get galls. He was 23 and his skin was thin and not very elastic. She did have a breastcollar & crupper and we came to consider the girth pretty much ornamental.
