Re: [RC] Saddles that move forward/backward - Sisu West Ranch"... I never used a breast collar and I have never owned a crupper. Up hill down hill the saddle stays put. ..." It is interesting to me that in the mountains, without exception, period all pack stock (horse and mule) uses both a breast collar and either (or both) a breaching or a crupper. When the load must stay in position, without fussing the solution is to make sure the saddle does not move. After seeing a really bad wreck on the steep horse trail in Minnesota*, I started using them. My saddles do fit my horses. The cruppers do not dig into the tail. The saddle just stays in place better, particularly when the girth is looser than it should be. Ed *The singular is used deliberately, in 30 years of riding in MN this was the only official trail I found that would be considered steep by MT standards. It, and all trails that steep, should probably be rebuilt to Trail Master standards, but that is a different discussion for a different forum.
