Some thoughts here....
If a horse is not healthy, it is not suitable for human
consumption.
What is to be done with all the excess horses that
cannot be bought and assimilated into the population of saddle horses, whether
they be show, trail, CTR or endurance horses? Is it so much worse to
serve them on a platter where humans will benefit, than it is to incarcerate
them in corrals waiting hopefully for someone to adopt them?
I've read that only the wealthy in Europe eat horse
meat. Why is it that anytime someone opposes an issue, the "wealthy" are
always blamed as being contributors to the problem? Are we all sure it is
only the wealthy who eat horsemeat?
I've loved horses all my life, but I also like
cows. They have personalities, just as horses do. So do goats,
sheep and numerous other animals that humans use for food.
Because we have elevated horses to the pet status, some folks can't abide the
thought of killing and eating one. Some other nations in the world take a
more practical outlook, and when there is starvation in the world, it seems a
shame to just dump horses without them serving one more purpose.
Disposing of the carcass, as the writer below
mentioned, is also an issue. If I really think hard about it, I would be
reluctant to sell my faithful riding buddy for slaughter, but with a mass of
unwanted horses, whether it be wild ones rounded up to prevent overpopulation or
horses from farms that have overbred numbers....well, what is the
solution? Does anyone have a better idea?

I have to
side with Diane on this one. I don't have a problem with slaughtering
horses for human consumption. If horse slaughter is outlawed in this
country...what are we to do with horses that are not healthy enough to
live?
