My beloved Chancy was said to be
Arab/Walker.....after several years of "negotiation" she turned into my best and
favorite horse.....she could go and climb hills all day long, and was very
smooth. Of course the only reason she did not get the name "Hell
Bitch" was that Truman already had grabbed it for HIS TWH mare!!! Mine was
not gaited...but had an extremely fast walk, strong trot and very smooth canter;
plus was very surefooted.
With so many Arab crosses floating around; I am
surprised there are not more walker/ARab crosses. Over the years I have had
horses that were Arab crossed on appys; Tb's, QH, Morgan, mustang, and possibly
Peruvian Paso, and Arab/standardbred/QH cross........the arab/walker was my
favorite
Also, Roberta, for info on what TWH are good
working lines, check with Amber Applegate (she has website listed in
enduance.net)....
Yep, almost all TWH have the old time stuff way back
there. Carbon Copy, Ebony Masterpiece (that's a name I had not heard in
a while), Roan Allan, Merry Go Boy, Midnight Sun. I think you have to
look at the horse and see what he looks like he could do............We used to
have a horse called Rue's Blubelle and she was a pretty ugly bald faced roan
but she was a true natural walker. Some people moved into Trilby's
barn with a roan walking horse and we commented that he looked like our old
Rue's Bluebelle and it turned out to be the old horse's dam....small
world...........Course I also had a horse named Little Black Booger (a
mare) That was her registered name and no I did not name
her..................mb
>The
TWH barns here have no idea which bloodlines would be appropriate
for endurance. They are completely focused on the
shows. Has anyone done this research? I would
appreciate any information about TWH that have excellent endurance
records (mileage not wins).<
Hi E,
I don't know about a
study -- but we have two currently competing Walkers (one actually a
Spotted Saddle Horse of TWH breeding) who love this sport.
Bubba
G just completed all five days of Bryce Canyon XP for a little over 1,200
miles in less than ten months. He is 15.2 with nine-inch cannons and a
relatively light torso.
My mare Sports Infatuated Gypsy has 635
lifetime miles after starting her endurance career last year at the age
of ten. She is the smartest, most sure-footed horse I've ever
ridden.
Gypsy and Bubba share the stallion Ebony Masterpiece in the
third generation, both on the mare's side. There are lots of "Go Boy" and
"Midnight" horses but I'll bet they appear in lots of gaited
horse pedigrees.
I think the key is to look for a horse with good
bone structure, well shaped feet, a good back and clean way of going.
Both of ours have a tremendous work ethic and I think that's a virtue of
the breed.
