Re: [RC] oleander - Jo Ann Knight

Yes I used to ride down a road near my home in Fresno County and there were
Oleanders all along the road and eventually the were removed and I didn't
see any around except on Old 99 and other highways. Fortunately my greedy
Morab didn't ever try to grab at the Oleanders, but it was a fluke, cause
she was inclined to make sudden grabs for something to eat, but usually
grasses and tall weeds.

The "berries" may have been pyracantha (sp). We had those and my parents
pointed out to us kids that while birds might eat them we mustn't.

Here in CA, Cal Trans plants them as highway dividers. They also plant some
kind of bush that has berries on it, birds eat the berries and are sometimes
killed, either by collision with cars or from becoming tipsy due to eating
fermented berries. But oleander is a very prominent highway divider. One
doesn't expect horses or cattle to be wandering down a divided highway, but
it's scary to think of anyway...dying from eating it, that is.

Boy, I'm glad people don't plant oleanders in Kansas. I don't think I've
ever seen one.
