Re: [RC] We came to a fork in the trail of life//HorseRetirement - Beverley H. Kane, MDEric et al, Porter will have a great life! I personally know Martha McNiel and Dreampower Horsemanship. http://www.dreampowerhorsemanship.com/index.htm She is terrific with horses and with helping horses help people. For anyone whose horse is no longer able to do endurance, working in a therapeutic riding program or in equine experiential learning (EEL--usually no riding) or equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) can be a second career, second childhood. In my EEL programs and EAP sessions, I use horses that are temporarily or permanently lame, retired, or otherwise unsuitable for riding. The ranch owner loves that they are interacting with people (to say nothing of earning some keep again, as I pay the horse by the hour). I swear, the horses -know- they have a new purpose and -love- this work. (Little plug--it'll be easier to get John's forgiveness than permission--I can come to your ranch and work w/ your horses.)
