A lot of us think it is beneficial to do both sports. Probably for the rider as much as for the horse. It teaches us how to pace the horse and how to ride smart so we have the most horse left over at the end of the ride.
 
It can be learned in endurance too, but it's kind of mandatory learning in CTR, LOL.
 
BTW, if your horse isn't too young or too old or crippled, it probably can do the sport.

I'm not sure I've followed this thread closely enough, but I wonder if newcomers to Endurance might not benefit from a year in CTR.  It's true that each sport has its own culture, but I felt that I learned a great deal from CTR about getting myself and my horse safely down the trail.  If I had a horse that could do endurance, I would do it but I would not discount the educational value of CTR.
