I'm a noob here, but I heartily agree with Mary Ann, on all counts.  I would back off and get my relationship with the horse balanced before I put any tack back on him.  And, I'd be able to ride him with a halter and single rein before putting on a hackamore.  It's very important to be consistent, and with some horses, moreso than others.

 

Another point is right-brained, or 'reactive' behavior.... my mare can make up fairy tale with the best of them, but when I keep her attention on me....  she's too busy to get distracted by her own fiction.

 

Also, those 'out of nowhere' things have some pre-incident indicators.........  but tunig into those messages takes time to learn

 

Also just switched to G-mail, and not at all sure I like it better than Yahoo.......   anybody else? I can figure out how to sort the messages by subject , and the reply is directed to the individual, not the list (same as Yahoo, dagnabbit).....  suggestions?

2. You need to do more non trail work and then when you go out, do small rides first.  I prefer Parelli training methods.  Works for all breeds.

3.  You may be giving him mixed clues for halting-one with hands and different one with your seat.

4.  There are LOTS of online places for you to get training.  TWH have much the same problems with halting and moving off as other horses.  All depending on individual sensitivities.

He's a 5 year old, and I'm riding him with a straight kimberwick bit, and walking horse saddle, (doesn't appear to be problems there). 

 

The problem is when he's asked to stop or be held back riding in the woods he wants to bounce up on the front end or bow up and give me a little bit of a hump with it as well.

 

We've had him for just a month, so we're still trying to figure out any gliches, but the biggest one was last week, brush poppin', and we went into itch weeds, we were getting ready to cross a dry branch that was an immediate down-up scenario, (my thinking he would just attempt to jump up the bank) instead, I got an out of no where, half rear, launch off the haunches to or three times before he headed up a bank, and I ended up in tree branches off the back, (was not anywhere to circle between banks up till the launch).  When I went to get back on, he was going to start it again, so I just lead out till we were clear of itch weeds.   But main point is now, I think when held back or in a situation, that's what he does. 

 

Any suggestions on this, or is it just going to be a handle it as it arrives?  I've always been a little leary of a horse wanting to come off the front end.
