[RC] TWH - rides2far. They can be very tough, have a great work ethic, and are generally very good minded horses, with an affinity for people and children. I thought of this thread last night when I had to drive up towards Shelbyville...the Mecca of Walking Horse country. For those of you who aren't near the heart of it all, a "Walking Horse Barn" is a long wide hall with stalls on each side and a wide area at each end. They take the shod up horses out of the stall, ride them down that hall in full big lick, do a spin turn at the other end, and bring'em back. Over and over and over. :-P You seldom see them outside. Those barns are everywhere up there. I agree they must have good minds. My uncle was raised in Winchester, TN (by Shelbyville) and is obsessed with these horses. He's got about 15 out in a field now and he's around 80 and has had two bypass surgeries. Every year he'll have some of these 3 year olds sent to a trainer for 30 days or so, and after that he thinks they're "broke" as if it's a switch you flip on or off. Then he or the grandkids or whoever gets on them and ride them gaiting around their field. Scares me to death, but those horses haven't killed them yet. If anybody within driving distance of NW Alabama (Henegar if you mapquest it) is interested in a registered TWH his health is failing and he really needs to sell some of them. He's got a pretty good variety if you like seal brown. >g< Most are probably between 2 and 6. They've been well cared for and never stalled unless it was at the trainer. Probably never shod.
