Re: [RC] Coolers - Jody Rogers-Buttram

You are 100% right.  I LOVE my wool coolers.  And for those of you out there, that want a CHEAP source....go buy an army blanket.  They are 100% wool and cost about $12 from Cheaperthandirt.com.

Funny story:  At the OD this year, my crew forced me to cut up one of my $12 army blankets.  I nearly cried and I DID fight the scissors and them.   But, I didn't even blink at cutting up my $65 wool girth covers.

And to Laurie:   I still don't have that blanket sewed back together.  :)))

Jody (who may order a couple more of them for the NC)

I make horse blankets, and can tell you that NOTHING does the work of wool.  Different coolers have their use for different situations.
Terry Clothe is great for cool days, when the horse is sweaty but wool or polar fleece will overheat them.  Terry absorbs the sweat, breaks the wind and keeps the chill off.  Washes great, lasts forever.
Cotton is going to absorb, not wick, so the blanket will become wet, and act as a cooling agent, as the moisture evaporates.
Polar Fleece is ok, easy to care for, but doesn't wick as well as wool.  Polar Fleece is not a good wind break.
Wool - I mean a good quality wool.  Nothing in the world wicks like wool and helps hold in the horses body heat.  On below freezing days in the winter when I work the horses, then put a wool blanket on them, by the time we're done walking, there's a layer of frost on top of the blanket - because the wool has wicked away the moisture, but kept the horse's body heat inside.  Also, a heavy wool quarter sheet will actually keep the horse's rump dry when riding in the rain - as the wool constantly wicks the moisture to the top, keeping the horse's rump dry.

Subject: [RC]   Coolers

I am looking to purchase a new cooler as my new horse dwarfs my old, and so the works are being repurchased.  Anyway as I stared at all the options in my local Greenhawk I thought I would ask about some pro's and con's before reinvesting.
I have always just bought Polar fleece ones and never thought twice about it.  But now I realize there are tons of options!  Waffle weaves, wool, Synthetic, cotton.... Some of the synthetics sound like my soccer jersey's with all the wicking technology to draw sweat away.

So realisticly, and I know opinions will vary but what works best.
