Re: [RC] Kann (picture) - Bette Lamore

Right, Louise, and the Russians picked horses to breed for specific traits and crosses (not every sire had all the ideals nor every dam-- they banked on the offspring getting the desired traits of each and then breeding again and again to make these traits dominant). Kann was picked for the substance of bone and the speed gene, as that was what the French were (and still) breeding for. French Arabians -- even the well documented purebred ones -- look more like thoroughbreds because that was the "type" they were breeding for and what they looked for in the sire and dam. They took some recessive traits initially (after all, the thoroughbred descended largely from the Arab) and bred until they were the dominant traits. Still they were Arabians because of blood despite the fact they did not look like the Crabbet or Egyptian ones (of course there is some question as to the newer French horses on whether or not there is some foul play and most breeders at the track will say yes -- but then there has always been great suspicion that Serafix was an Anglo Arab -- wouldn't that upset the applecart!!??) At any rate, Kann did as he was supposed to do and passed on great substance of bone and speed. Breeding programs looked at the long haul and not to cross 2 perfects for a perfect -- at least not initially. But then, that is what most of the older programs did in the early stages until they got what they wanted (And I might add, Sheila Varian did that as well and is touted as one of the most successful breeders, yet if you look at some of her foundation horse, you will see significant conformational flaws in many -- yet the lady was smart and knew how to cross to get the best each had to offer :-)

*/BUT...his dam was Rixalina, who was Crabbet, and that is probably why the "K" lines look so "Crabbet-like". For a good example of a "K" horse, you can see Krakow on our webpage./*
