[RC] Braiding the mane - Susan

The picture, while beautiful(!!), is unrealistic for endurance.  I use hunter buttons and hunt braids for foxhunting and showing.  Mine don't pull out when the horse drops his head or flexes because they are in 1" sections.  Braids pull out when too large of a section is used.

For endurance, I do use large sections of mane and braid down about 3/4 of the way.  If your horse's neck is such that hair is being pulled out, loosen up at the top and braid tighter down the length.

To get the mane off the neck, you could do a French braid but that is what really pulls the mane out.  Instead, you can braid sections of mane, like you see so many endurance people do, and braid yarn into the bottom then tie it up.  I like the loop braids where you braid yarn into the bottom 1/3 of the braid then tie it to the top of the 2nd or 3rd braid down the neck.  Think scallops.  This is a good and easy way of getting the mane off the neck while not damaging the mane.
