Re: [RC] [RC] Braiding the mane - rides2far@xxxxxxxxI think that sounds pretty plausible. After all, if the mane did NOT contribute to cooling of the horse, wouldn't the Bedouins have bred for short manes, ala the Zebra, instead of for long, fine ones? Maybe in places where they have low humidity and just the sun beating down on your skin that might be plausible, but all it takes down here is being a woman with long hair to know hair holds heat! You won't find anyone around here outside without a ponytail if their hair's long enough to let them have one. I have pulled mine up with no more than a 1" ponytail before. looks rediculous but when sweat can't evaporate you at least want the wind to hit that wet area. It's your only chance. I've gone to the racehorse mane look on 2 out of 3 of mine. I like that little 4" neat mane...just enough to hang onto and he looks sharp. Kaboot's got that Andalusian looking forelock so his mane is left long. I braid it even when he's out in the field on these hottest days, otherwise you can put your hand under there and feel the difference in temperature. He'll be dry everywhere except under that mane.
