[RC] Water/Colic - Sabrina Liska

Okay. Growing up, we learn that you do not give a horse water if it (the horse) is hot. We didnt learn about heartrate, just feeling the chest to see if the horse was hot to the touch. Since riding endurance and LD's, we learn that letting your horse drink heartily and even eating is very encouraged. Why is this? We were taught one thing, and now we do the opposite. Is is because during the "ride", we are continuing the body to move, and therefore using the water and food, as opposed to putting a hot horse away, letting him eat/drink and then stand around? I am comfortable letting my horse drink while on a "ride", as I would/do appreciate water when I am hot and working. (Or an athlete for that matter, we would never consider NOT giving water). Can anyone explain or offer suggestions as to the difference or share their experiences? I came across this question and didnt really have an answer, so now I am curious. (Things that make you go "hmmmm"...)
