[RC] Tiny Hienies & Lardbutts (was: Civility) - k s swigart

Joe Long said:

Hmmm ... I don't recall the particulars, that was probably
Truman, and was written as a "friendly" jibe (apposite to
"tiny hienies"). Definitely not intended to be an insult.

I don't for a minute believe that Truman's (and quite a few other
heavyweight riders') reference to lightweights as tiny hienies is not
intended as an insult. Its very intent is to demean the accomplishment
of successful lighter weight riders. The heavy weight mantra is "if I
beat you, it is because I am better than you are, I have selected my
horse carefully, I have conditioned carefully, I have done my homework,
I do everything I can to help my horse carry (or not carry) my weight;
whereas if you beat me it is because you are lighter than I am."

The appellation, "tiny hieny" is a deliberate attempt to debase the
achievements of lighter riders by using a derogatory term to describe
people who routinely out ride him. I don't consider it a "friendly
jibe" at all. I figure it is a way for him to provide a salve for his
ego and with an excuse for getting beaten......by a girrrrrl.

Neither lardbutt not tiny hieny are friendly jibes, and besides, even if
that is the way they are intended, friendly jibes can only be used that
way among good friends--i.e. people you know well enough and have enough
mutual respect between you that such derogatory terms will not be taken
with offense.

You gotta figure, that if such terms are used on an internet mailing
list that is subscribed to by over 1000 people and can be read by
anybody in the world with an internet connection (so vast numbers of the
readers are going to be strangers, not friends), that it is intended as
an insult.
