Yep, the first Race of Champions, on the Big Horn 100 trail. High altitude was Amir's "Achilles Heel." Most horses don't have a problem with altitude, but Amir's recoveries would tank. I don't believe he won any of his rides that were held above 6,000 feet -- and lost almost none below that. Little anecdotes: the only time Kahlil ever beat Amir was the time Jon Warren rode him, and I'm pretty sure Jon let me win. He was only riding to qualilfy for the Husband/Wife award. When I was managing rides, after the first couple I adopted a policy that if I rode my own ride (with Robbie as Day Manager), I would not finish in First Place. I would hold back if necessary. Sometimes I stood for Best Condition, and sometimes I didn't, I couldn't seem to make up my mind about that. Well, on one ride, Nina Warren and I are out in front about three or four miles from the finish, and she asks me if I'm going to stand for B.C. I tell her "Yes, I think I will." She said "Thanks, I just needed to know how much to beat you by" and took off. Had I said "No" she'd have just ridden in with me, knowing I wouldn't race at the finish. Oh, Amir won B.C. -- Joe Long jlong@xxxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.chiprider.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
