I believe the reason we see poor riding at Cougar Rock is fear.
I personally studied those photos of the rock on Tevis website for months
prior, so when I got there I had a plan and I was laughing and encouraging
Gorgeous George while enjoying every second of that climb.
At any rate, I've seen the photos that look like riders are experiencing
pure fear- I believe they just aren't mentally prepared. Horses can and will
climb like a goat when needed, and their four legs are way more capable than our
