Re: [RC] Weight--Long - Helen and Larry McMasterFrom: "Bruce Weary" <bweary@xxxxxxxxxxxx> I'm not saying that weight is the overall determinant of a horse's outcome or performance. All other details must be attended to as well. Feed management, equitation, pacing, shoeing, etc.,. There is a constant with weight, however. It always requires more energy to move that heavier weight Comparing CTR to Endurance may be comparing apples to oranges, but here in Ont. under OCTRA rules, we divide all the open riders into 3 weight categories (eg - 60 riders = 20 lightweight, 20 middle and 20 heavyweight) All compete under the same rules. My husband has been scoring rides for the past 15 years or so, and he says that the overall scores for heavyweight riders are usually higher than the other divisions. Most often the Top and Reserve riders are not heavyweights. Horses carrying heavyweight riders generally take longer to recover than the others. It does appear that the horses carrying the most weight work harder. Helen McMaster Ont.
