Agreed. Here is the text of a reply I made about this on the Ride Manager's list: It's interesting that the AERC National Championship ride has never achieved the status and desirability that was enjoyed by the Race of Champions. I think there are a number of reasons for this, not the least of which is that Susan was a great promoter. However, I think a BIG reason is that at the Race of Champions there was ONE Champion (only one rider got the horse trailer). The AERC National Championship Rides have TEN "Champions" -- four Weight Divisions and a Junior Champion at each distance. You can never have the same cachet with multiple Champions as you have with one "Best of the Best." I believe that the weight divisions came about (and we ended up with so many of them) because some heavy riders wanted it to be easier for them to win. But instead of building up the Heavyweights, IMO we just pulled everyone else down. -- Joe Long jlong@xxxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.chiprider.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
