[RC] choice and training horses - Trust - Barb PeckI have one of these horses too. He's been retured 3 years due to a pasture accident and now 20 years old. I didn't raise him thought - picked him up when he was 6 for a song in a show barn because he just wouldn't do anything anyone wanted him to... (i.e. arena/ring work).. he didn't fight- just wouldn't do it. No matter what. It took me 3 years to form a relationship with this horse- but when we finally clicked- he'd do anything I asked and was/is amazing. He eventually became herd-bound to me. Which surprised me. He preferred me to other horses especially in situations when we were away from home. On the last competitive ride we did- he'd whinny and look for me if I went out of his site while he was tied to the trailer.. it didn't matter to him how many horses were around. This horse is the only horse I've ever owned, who preferred me over his herdmates (although he's not the most friendly horse- to humans or other animals - I call him Cranky Man - he's solid and completely trustworthy in ever circumstance). I can still tell by his nicker or whinny, or body language exactly what he wants. He comes and goes as he pleases from his stall to an individual pasture but I still spend time with him almost every day, even though I don't ride him anymore. Barb LEE WROTE IN PART: He had five buddies but would leave them and go stand in the corner that faced my house and call for me until I came. He would gladly leave his buddies and follow without halter or rope, down to his small paddock at the house and happily follow me around doing chores. I was there when he was born into my waiting arms. I was his first smell in this world outside of his momma. He is the only horse that I have owned that I feel has a good chance to complete Tevis - and he is the last horse I would ask to do it - because he would do anything I ask, and therefore it is my responsibility to ask carefully.
