[RC] Jumping, Horse Prerogitive and Helmets - Sharon Hinshaw
From
a lurker... are a few examples of a horse loving to jump,
horse prerogative
and use of helmets that have happened to me over the last few months.1) At
a recent moonlight ride (held through a fox hunter course), my horse, (who
loves to jump) used his prerogative and in the dark before the rise of the
moon went over a jump instead of around it. I didn?t see the jump as the
glowstick marking it had fallen?JEEZ don?t know how I stayed on and the
rest of the ride had to really watch out for the jumps!!! 2) At
a different ride in Kentucky (wide open spaces that we are not used to) my
horse that for years I have always ridden in a bitless bridle, used
his prerogative once again to become "Mr. Hyde" and instead of middle of
the pack tried to be leader of the pack. In the very slick bluegrass of
Kentucky
we had a ?little spill? during that very first couple of miles while using
his prerogative. Hit the ground on my tailbone instead of my headbone and
wishing my tail had a helmet. Climbed back on but could not ?sit? in
saddle and at about the 30 mile point a spectator told my husband and crew
that my horse spooked at the photographer. I never knew anything until I
woke up as I was being put in an ambulance for a little trip to the trauma
center. Still don?t remember ?the event? or the day after. Now over 2
months later I am still dealing with double vision and some other sensory
problems from the MTBI along with a C6 spinous process fracture and of
course last but not least the tailbone fracture from the first fall. Hey
I?m not complaining, I had used my human prerogative and had my helmet on
so at least I?m not a ?veggie?, in a wheelchair or under the
daisies????..bones heal quickly, brains do not?..WEAR YOUR HELMET in case
your horse uses his prerogative or s*** happens. Here?s hoping the heat and
humidity break soon and a very big Good Luck to allhorses and riders at Tevis.
Watching with interest the SE riders entered! Sharon and
Renegade (lately Mr. Hyde)
P.S.
My real job happens to be on a rescue helicopter and when I woke up in the
ambulance I was told later I said..."oh no...make sure you do this
right...you won't believe what I do for a living...LOL...They also told me
I kept trying to get up, saying " bring me my horse..let me up we
have to finish the ride....."
