I've worked with alot of hunter/jumper/combined training/foxhunting people,
and have done a fair bit of jumping myself in the olden days (sigh!). A
calm, talented rider can do wonders for a nervous horse, and a
high-strung ancy rider can make the best horse refuse any jump. As
with any discipline in the horse world, it's a team effort! I've seen more
crashes in which a rider lacks the confidence to pass on to their horse than
ones where a rider is simply reckless.
