[RC] - Heidi Vanderbilt

I decided a few years ago to ride in a bike helmet. My reasoning was that if you fall off a bike, you're probably going a lot faster than if you fall off a horse. Therefor, I thought, the bike helmet would be great. Also, it looked terrific and was a lot cooler than my riding helmet.

My horse spooked, I fell off onto a pile of rocks, on my head, and was OUT. I hit the side of my head--at the lowest point of the helmet- hard enough to remember it, even though I don't remember anything else about the fall or for some time before it. The friends I was with said i was unconscious for several minutes. I don't remember. I finished the ride, but everything I experienced after the fall was doubled--whatever happened from then on, I thought had already happened! The doc said it was a concussion, and the effects lasted several weeks.

I've spent my life falling off horses, often hit my head--and it's been kicked and even stepped on once. This was the only concussion i've ever had. The beautiful helmet was trashed. I didn't get another, just went back to my old one, hotter, heavier and more protective.
