RE: [RC] More on Falling and Helmets - heidi

Lisa, your posts have been excellent.  In one of my falls, the helmet was shattered, but my head was not much injured (I pretty much slid on my forehead).  In the other, I actually landed quite well and didn't hit my head on impact--but had the horse leap back over me and accidentally clout me on the head with a hoof.  (There's a great shot of one like that in the "Every Ride, Every Time" video that another poster mentioned.)  In that incident, I lost consciousness (less than a minute) and had short-term memory loss for about a quarter of an hour.  The helmet was shattered to smithereens.  I did walk away, and being a long way from a hospital and having a good observer to watch me through the night, I opted to stay home and rest rather than subject my concussed brain to a long drive down a bumpy road.  But had I not had that helmet on, I would have either ended up a patient in a facility such as the one where you work, or in the morgue on a slab.  The helmet was cheap by comparison.

Heidi

Brain injuries can happen, even with the best rated helmets.  When ones head lands (impacts) something hard with velocity it is probable that coup-contra coup will happen.  The  brain inside the skull will rebound from the point of impact to the opposite side of the skull and back.
