RE: [RC] 2006 Big Horn 100 - Steph Teeter

Please remember that the problems encountered at this year's Big Horn were
unique. The 2006 trail from Alpine to Jacks Creek was excessively long and
excessively difficult. Nobody was able to do it in less than 7 hours, and
this was supposedly a 25 mile stretch. Pal and I trotted a fair amount, even
cantered some. And the last half of this loop had sections of trail that
were difficult to see in the daylight, they would have been impossible to
follow in the dark w/o tons of ribbons, or a gps system (which is how Tom,
Chris and Max eventually got through it). Additionaly nobody (including
ride management) knew it would take so long to do this section. I didn't
pack any lights because since we left Alpine at 2:40 I was sure I'd make it
25 miles to Jack Creek before dark. But we did't, and while finishing that
25 mile loop, I felt that I was asking too much of this (any) horse, and by
the end of the ride (another 5 hours to finish from Jack's Creek), I had
decided that I wouldn't do this to a horse again. If ride management either
gets Adelaide Creek back, or finds another trail from Alpine to Jacks Creek,
I would ride the 100 again, but not if the trail was the same as 2006.
Otherwise I would come back and do the 50 or 75 just to experience the
beauty of this country. I love a challenge, but not at the expense of a good
horse.

Steph

I don't have the exact numbers, but didn't over 50% of the riders

complete, some fewer than 30% complete.

8 out of 24 riders successfully (as defined by the AERC) completed the
ride.
