RE: [RC] Barbaro and Thorouhbreds breaking down - Tracey LomaxHi, I'm sorry to come in late. I've been working (ack!!) I know full well the "evils" of the TB racing industry, but I gotta tell you that, for a jumper-dressage rider-eventer, OTTTBs are a gift!! Where else can you get a horse who is backed, can walk, trot, canter and gallop, stands for the farrier, will climb into a horse box without batting an eyelid, is traffic proof and crowd proof - for a song!! I'd be lost without the racing industry. Having said that, there is good and bad in all industries. I like to get my babies from friends who own, breed, and train their own horses. The horses are raised in fields in a herd, backed as late two-year-olds and come into racing as late 3yo's. They currently have two mares who are running and winning as TEN YEAR OLDS. That should say something for the horse's soundness. Sure, some of them break down, but when you produce that many in a year, you are bound to have some who do, no matter how careful you are, it's the law of averages. Their stallions go out into fields, and the mares and geldings are pastured together. It's horsey heaven. I'm not sure what the answer is, because I know that not all TBs have such a good life, but I do confess that I am a fan of the sport of horse racing. Sorry!
