[RC] Raven's record ;-) - Sue Walz


David,

Raven's record has it's dismal points up to this year. This is the first season that I went for barefoot starts. I've had 100% success with a top 10 & a win! And I have a happy horse!
Last year I was booting at the starts, unsuccessful. He'd throw a boot & torque a leg... out lame. I had tried foaming on the boots, too, in previous years. Another disaster! It did work on two rides, though. At Santiam '04 I found he could over reach barefoot & slice his front heal open! He wears over reach boots on every competition now. Many of Raven's pulls were from thrown shoes in his shod years. As a gaited horse he has always had a tough time keeping boots & shoes on. He threw a plastic shoe last year on Tevis. That contributed to my RO pull. I could go on & on......
The fact I continued to believe in him & perservered with all of his quirks & oddities has boggled many people,s minds! He's a one of a kind horse & I've learned a lot in our seasons together!

OK, so I apologize in advance for asking a somewhat rude question, but you
said you pulled shoes 4 years ago. In posted AERC records, you've only
completed 7 in 16 attempts in that period of time. I'm not sure I understand
how this is successful, esp. given that average is about an 85% completion
rate. Sounds like you're doing well this year, so good luck.
